Advaita develops bioinformatics data analysis tools with capabilities to integrate multi-'omic' data from a systems biology perspective. Our proprietary computational method, Impact Analysis, considers the type, function, position and interaction between genes in a pathway as opposed to other approaches that consider genes to be independent.
Through our $2.2 million NIH STTR Phase II award, we have developed a software platform called Pathway-Guide for the analysis of data from high-throughput microarray and next-generation sequencing experiments. Our next generation product, iPathwayGuide, is a web-based pathway analysis application based on our Impact Analysis method. We are the only company in the industry that includes other crucial factors about the genes in addition to classical statistics. iPathwayGuide includes unique capabilities such modeling SNPs, miRNAs and drugs directly on the pathways and predicting miRNA potentially regulating gene expression in your samples based only on mRNA data. Our vision is to create a platform for multi-omic integration and analysis from a systems biology level.
Advaita is also working on developing innovative tools for subtyping of diseases and patients. These tools address the classic "responder" vs. "non-responder" problem facing 50% of drugs that reach Phase 3 clinical trials. With our technology, we can identify truly homogeneous populations and the mechanisms that distinguish them from other populations.

Sorin Draghici, Ph.D. President and CEO
Dr. Draghici currently holds the Robert J. Sokol MD Endowed Chair in Systems Biology in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and is a professor in the Department of Clinical and Translational Science and the Department of Computer Science, as well as the head of the Intelligent Systems and Bioinformatics Laboratory at Wayne State University (http://vortex.cs.wayne.edu). He is also the chief of the Bioinformatics and Data Analysis Section in the Perinatology Research Branch of the National Institute for Child Health and Development. A senior member of IEEE, Dr. Draghici is an editor of IEEE/ACM Transactions on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Journal of Biomedicine and Biotechnology, and International Journal of Functional Informatics and Personalized Medicine. His publications include two books (”Data Analysis Tools for DNA Microarrays and Statistics” and ”Data Analysis for Microarrays using R”, both published by CRC Press in 2003 and 2012, respectively), 8 book chapters, and over 100 peer-reviewed journal and conference publications which gathered over 5,000 citations to date.
Andrew Olson, MBA Vice President Business Development
Mr. Olson is a serial entrepreneur with a business development background in a number of industry settings. As a former university technology transfer principal, Mr. Olson has helped commercialize a number of technologies. Mr. Olson has served as a mentor to many entrepreneurs. He formed Wayne State University's inaugural Warrior Fund, a pre-seed technology venture fund to help student entrepreneurs get their businesses off the ground, and served as the chair on its selection committee. Mr. Olson has extensive experience in managing technology licenses, joint-ventures, mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures. Mr. Olson holds an MBA from the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business. He also has an undergraduate degree with high distinction in Marketing from the University of Minnesota. Mr. Olson speaks Japanese and likes to race Porsche 928s in his spare time.
Calin Voichita, Ph.D. Director R&D
Dr. Voichita's expertise resides in the functional analysis of signaling pathways. As part of Dr. Draghici’s laboratory, he studied ways to detect abnormalities in the behavior of biological networks. He designed and implemented methods to propagate measured expression changes through gene signaling pathways in the Pathway-Express application, as part of the Onto-Tools suite. Recently, he proposed a method that is able to eliminate the need to select differentially express genes before performing pathway analysis. This method allows life scientists to take advantage of the wealth of information available with the recent RNAseq technologies. Furthermore, his experience includes computational intelligence; he showed that the predictions obtained with one of the most common techniques used in a classification framework (i.e., medical diagnostic), the Support Vector Machines (SVM), are highly dependent an a priori choice of parameters for hard to classify samples. To overcome this, he proposed an SVM enhancement that is able to identify these circumstances and predict these samples as uncertain until further investigation can be performed in order to confidently classify them.
Radu Vanciu, Ph.D. Software Developer
Dr. Vanciu's research interests are in system security, software maintenance and program comprehension. As part of his Ph.D. work at Wayne State University, he designed and developed an approach for finding security vulnerabilities in applications written in Java-like code, with an emphasis on Android applications. The approach focuses on finding vulnerabilities that are architectural flaws, such as misuse of cryptography, which are more difficult to find by existing fully automated approaches that identify only localized coding bugs among which are hard-coded password and unsafe system calls.
Since he joined the Advaita team, Dr. Vanciu applies his expertise to improve the development process, lower the cost of code maintenance, as well as ensure and improve the quality of web-applications that support the analysis of gene-expression data. Such web-applications need to be secure to ensure data confidentiality, and highly flexible in order to quickly and safely adapt to the continuous enhancements required by our customers.
Shean Krolicki, BSE Software Developer
Mr. Krolicki received his BSE in Computer Science Engineering from University of Michigan in 2016. He works primarily on the backend development. His areas of interest include software architecture and machine learning. In his free time, he enjoys watching independent films and reading Japanese comic books.
Cordelia Ziraldo, Ph.D. Product Manager
Dr. Ziraldo is a Computational Biologist with expertise in Systems Biology approaches to understanding Inflammation and Immunology. Her graduate and postdoctoral research was focused in two areas: 1) building mathematical models of biological systems to generate testable hypotheses; and 2) generating biological insights from clinical samples using statistical and machine learning approaches. Dr. Ziraldo holds degrees from The University of Chicago (B.S. Mathematics) and The University of Pittsburgh (Ph.D. Computational Biology). At Advaita, she is leading the launch and development of the iVariantGuide application, and is excited to share the power of computational approaches with a wider community of biologists and clinicians.
